Oil Pump: Service and Repair

1. Remove oil pan as previously described.
2. Remove pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt, then the pump and extension shaft, Fig. 15.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove pump cover attaching bolts, then the pump cover, Fig. 15.
2. Mark drive and idler gear teeth for assembly reference, then remove idler and drive gear and shaft from pump body.
3. Remove pin, spring and pressure regulator valve from pump cover.
4. If pickup tube and screen assembly are to be replaced, mount pump cover in a soft jawed vise and remove pickup tube from cover. Do not remove screen from pickup tube, as these components are serviced as an assembly.

INSPECTION
1. Inspect pump body and cover for excessive wear or cracks.
2. Inspect pump gears for damage or excessive wear. If pump body or gears are damaged or worn, the entire oil pump assembly must be replaced.
3. Check drive gear shaft for looseness in pump body.
4. Inspect interior of cover for wear that would allow oil to leak past ends of gears.
5. Inspect pickup tube, screen and relief grommet for damage.
6. Check pressure regulator valve for fit in pump cover.

ASSEMBLY
1. If pickup tube and screen were removed, apply suitable sealant to end of tube, then mount pump cover in a soft jawed vise and tap tube into position with a rubber mallet and a pickup tube and screen installer J-8369 or equivalent.
2. Install pressure regulator valve, spring and pin.
3. Install drive gear and shaft in pump body.
4. Install idler gear in pump body with smooth side of gear towards pump cover opening.
5. Install pump cover and tighten attaching screws to specifications.
6. Rotate pump driveshaft by hand to ensure smooth operation.

INSTALLATION
1. Position pump and extension shaft in rear main bearing cap, aligning slot on top of extension shaft with drive tang on lower end of distributor drive shaft. Oil pump should slide easily into place. No gasket is used.
2. Install pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt and tighten to specifications.
3. Install oil pan as previously described. Tighten oil pan bolts to specifications.
