Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect batteries.
2. Remove headlight bezels, then the grille.
3. Remove bumper, then the lower valence.
4. Remove hood latch assembly.
5. Remove coolant recovery bottle and upper fan shroud.
6. Remove upper tie bar, then engine cover.
7. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, discharge system, then disconnect A/C condenser inlet and outlet lines and remove condenser. Plug A/C lines and condenser fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.
8. Disconnect low coolant sensor wire and drain radiator.
9. Disconnect transmission and engine oil cooler lines from radiator.
10. Remove radiator upper and lower hose, then remove radiator and fan assembly.
11. Remove fuel injection pump. Refer to ``Injection Pump, Replace.''
12. Raise and support vehicle.
13. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds.
14. Remove inspection cover, then remove torque converter to flex plate bolts.
15. Remove motor mount through bolt nuts.
16. Disconnect block heater electrical connector from heating element and the ground wire from block.
17. Remove bellhousing-to-cylinder case attaching bolts.
18. Disconnect starter wiring, then remove starter.
19. Lower vehicle.
20. If equipped with cruise control, remove cruise control transducer.
21. If equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor suction and discharge lines, then remove rear compressor brace, brackets and compressor. Plug A/C lines and compressor fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.
22. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
23. Remove oil filler tube upper bracket.
24. Remove glow plug relay, then disconnect oil pressure sender and loom.
25. Remove air cleaner resonator and bracket.
26. Remove transmission filler tube bracket nut and position bracket aside.
27. Disconnect radiator, heater and bypass hoses at air crossover.
28. Remove generator upper bracket.
29. Remove coolant crossover.
30. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
31. Install engine lifting adapter J-33888 or equivalent.
32. Position suitable engine lifting device and connect to engine lifting adapter. Remove engine.
33. Reverse procedure to install.
