Ignition Timing: Adjustments

NOTE: Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure.

PROCEDURE:

1. With the engine control switch OFF, connect the pick-up lead of a timing light to the number one spark plug wire. Connect a jumper lead between the wire and plug or use an inductive type pick-up. DO NOT pierce the wire or attempt to insert a wire between the boot and the wire. Connect the timing light power light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor if so equipped.

3. Start the engine and aim the timing light at the timing indicator. The line on the balancer or pulley should line up at the timing mark on the pointer. If the timing needs to be changed, loosen the distributor hold-down clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. While observing the mark with the timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until the correct timing is attained. Tighten the hold-down bolt and recheck the timing.

4. Turn the engine OFF and remove the timing light. Reconnect the spark plug test wire, if removed.

5. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the distributor.
