Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove glove box assembly, if necessary, then the engine cover.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly, then disconnect wires from the spark plugs.
4. Remove accelerator, cruise control and TVS cables, if equipped.
5. Remove PCV hose and EGR valve.
6. Remove engine oil filler tube, then disconnect vacuum line and harness from the water outlet stud, then move aside.
7. Remove valve cover attaching bolts and the valve cover.
8. Drain cooling system and remove necessary hoses.
9. Disconnect front coolant hose from intake manifold.
10. Remove alternator bracket from intake manifold.
11. Remove rear alternator bracket and position alternator aside.
12. On models equipped with A/C, unfasten A/C compressor and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines attached.
13. On all models, remove thermostat outlet from cylinder head.
14. Disconnect remaining vacuum, fuel and electrical lines necessary for cylinder head removal.
15. Remove ignition coil, then disconnect wires from spark plugs.
16. Raise and support vehicle.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
18. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor, then lower vehicle.
19. Remove pushrods, then the cylinder head attaching bolts.
20. Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds as an assembly.
21. On 1988-90 models reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure cylinder head bolts are clean and dry, then apply suitable sealer to threads of bolt 9 only, Fig. 2.
b. Install and torque all bolts to 18 ft. lbs. in sequence, Fig. 2.
c. Torque all bolts in sequence to 26 ft. lbs., except No. 9. Torque No. 9 to 18 ft. lbs.
d. Tighten bolts in sequence an additional 90° (1/4 turn).
