Owner's Letter
Dear Chevrolet Owner:This notice is sent to inform you that Chevrolet Motor Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
General Motors has determined that certain 1989 Chevrolet M-Vans equipped with remote control locking fuel filler doors, were shipped with the incorrect fuel filler housing. The housing does not have the words "UNLEADED FUEL ONLY" molded in along the bottom flange. Without these words, these vehicles do not meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Since a label with the words "UNLEADED FUEL ONLY" can be easily installed and to reduce your inconvenience, we are enclosing a label with installation instructions. The label may be installed by you on the fuel filler door of your vehicle. However, if you desire, your Chevrolet dealer will install the label for you at no charge.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Please let us know if you elect to install the label yourself by completing the enclosed postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us. This assists us in assuring that all affected vehicles have been corrected.
Should you choose to have your local Chevrolet Dealer install the label for you, please bring the owner reply card along with the enclosed label to your servicing Chevrolet dealer. Presentation of this card and label to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us. Should your dealer not schedule a service date within a reasonable time, you should contact the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center by calling 1-800-222-1020.
If your dealer and the Customer Assistance Center are unable to remedy this condition within a reasonable time, you may wish to advise the Environmental Protection Agency, at the following address: Director, Manufacturer's Operations Division (EN340F), United States Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M Street. S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460. To ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal Law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Also, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test if this recall work is not accomplished.
We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

LABEL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. SURFACE PREPARATION
A. Immediately before installation of the self-adhesive label, the area of application (see figure) must be thoroughly cleaned.
B. Wipe off all loose dirt and grease with a clean, dry cloth and then clean surface with 50% isopropyl alcohol (household rubbing alcohol) to remove all grease or oil.
C. Dry surface with a clean, dry cloth.
D. Do not apply label if the surface temperature of the fuel door is below 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. LABEL APPLICATION
A. Firmly hold either front half or rear half of label to surface. Remove protective liner from the back side of the other half of the label. (The protective liner is split in half to permit removal of either half of liner separately.)
NOTE: Be careful not to touch or contaminate the sticky surface by allowing dirt or any other foreign matter to come in contact with it.
B. Still firmly holding one half of the label, press the other half of label (with liner removed) firmly to the inside surface of the filler door and smooth out wrinkles or bubbles.
C. Remove protective liner from remaining half of label and press firmly to surface and smooth out remaining wrinkles or bubbles.
