Cylinder Head Removal
Remove or Disconnect1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove intake manifold.
4. Remove exhaust manifolds.
5. Disconnect ground strap at rear of cylinder head (right side cylinder head).
6. Remove or disconnect components as follows for right side cylinder head:
^ Disconnect AIR pipe at the rear of the cylinder head.
^ Remove spark plug wires from the support brackets.
^ Remove generator; lay aside.
7. Remove or disconnect components as follows for left side cylinder head:
WARNING: High pressure refrigerant. Recover refrigerant properly.
^ Remove air conditioning compressor and front bracket (if equipped) and lay aside.
^ Remove power steering pump; lay aside.
^ Disconnect coolant sensor wire.
^ Remove spark plug wires from the support brackets.
^ Disconnect AIR pipe at the rear of the cylinder head.
8. Remove rocker arm cover.
9. Remove spark plugs.
10. Remove pushrods.
11. Remove cylinder head bolts.
12. Remove cylinder head.
13. Remove head gasket.
Clean
^ Carbon deposits from combustion chambers.
^ All traces of old head gasket from cylinder head and block.
^ Cylinder head bolt threads and threads in the block.
Inspect
^ Sealing surfaces of the block and cylinder head for nicks, heavy scratches, or other damage.
