Installation
Install or Connect
1. Install head gasket.
NOTICE: See TSB #87-204 for important headgasket information.
- If a steel gasket is used, coat both sides of the gasket with sealer. Spread the sealer thinly and evenly.
- Do not use sealer on composition steel-asbestos gaskets.
- Place the gasket over the block dowel pins with the bead up.
2. Install cylinder head. Carefully guide the cylinder head into place over the dowel pins and gasket.
CAUTION: When fasteners are removed, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct part number fastener for that application. If the correct part number fastener is not available, a fastener of equal size and strength (or stronger) may be used. The correct torque value must be used when installing fasteners that require it. If the above conditions are not met, parts or system damage could result.
3. Install cylinder head bolts. Coat threads of the cylinder head bolts with sealing compound (GM part number 1052080 or equivalent) and install finger-tight.
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
4. Tighten cylinder head bolts, in three steps, using the sequence shown in image.
Step 1. 30 n.m (22 ft. lbs.)
Step 2. 60 n.m (44 ft. lbs.)
Step 3. 92 n.m (68 ft. lbs.)
5. Install pushrods.
6. Adjust valves. Refer to Valve, Intake/Exhaust. Adjustments
7. Install spark plugs. Torque to: 20 n.m (15 lb. ft.)
8. Install rocker arm cover. Torque to: 11n.m (95 in.lbs.)
9. Install components as follows for right side cylinder head.
- Install oil dipstick tube bracket retaining bolt.
- Install spark plug wires to the support brackets.
- Install air conditioning compressor and mounting bracket.
10. Install components as follows for left side cylinder head.
- Install generator.
- Install power steering pump and support bracket.
- Connect coolant sensor wire.
- Install spark plug wires to the support brackets.
11. Connect ground strap at the rear of the cylinder head (right side cylinder head).
12. Install exhaust manifolds. Torque to:
Cast manifolds:
Two center bolts 36n.m (26 ft. lbs.)
All others 28n.m (20 ft. lbs.)
Tubular (stainless steel) manifolds:
All bolts 36n.m (26 ft. lbs.)
Intake Manifold Torque Sequence:
13. Install intake manifold. Torque in sequence (see image) to: 48n.m (35 ft.lbs.)
14. Connect battery negative cable.
15. Fill the cooling system with the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Cooling System, Capacities. Specifications
