SUBJECT: LOWER BODY MOLDING (CLADDING) DISCOLORATION (REFINISH PROCEDURE)

MODELS: 1991-1992 SYCLONE, TYPHOON, AND SONOMA GT

Some 1991-1992 Syclone, 1992 Typhoon, and 1992 Sonoma GT vehicles may experience a discoloration or fading appearance on black lower body molding (cladding package).

These conditions can occur from contaminants or ultraviolet degradation.

To correct this condition, it is necessary to refinish the molding. In order to obtain a good color match of individual pieces, the entire molding (cladding package) should be removed and refinished.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

NOTICE: The products listed below are manufactured by PPG. Follow all label directions for safety, application, and mixing instructions.

1. Remove visible rivets from the molding (cladding package), including front and rear bumpers, using a drill and 15/64" drill bit. Remove molding.

2. Remove the door molding decal. Refer to section 2B "DECAL REPLACEMENT" in the appropriate GMC Truck Light Truck S/T Models Service Manual (X-9129 or X-9229) for decal replacement instructions.

3. On Sonoma GT models only, remove the existing tape from the RH and LH quarter panel behind the rear wheel opening area and corresponding moldings using DX-330 or equivalent Grease and Wax Remover solvent. (New tape will be needed to provide maximum adhesion.)

4. Wash each molding piece with a mixture of MILD car wash soap and water.

5. Wipe molding with DX-330 or equivalent Grease and Wax Remover solvent.

6. Finish sand any damaged area with 400 grit paper.

7. Apply one coat of DP-90 or equivalent Black Epoxy Primer.

Important

If additional filling is required, apply two coats of K-36 or equivalent Acrylic Urethane Primer surfacer. Finish sand the K-36 with 400 grit and reapply one coat of DP-90 or equivalent Black Epoxy Primer.

8. Topcoat with two to three coats of DDL-9862 or equivalent low gloss black paint. Allow to dry 16 hours or force dry for 40 minutes at 140 degrees F before putting into service.

9. For Sonoma GT only, cut two pieces of two-sided tape, approximately 1/2" x 15-1/2" x 0.045". Install a new piece of tape on the RH and LH quarter panel. Position in the same location as tape previously removed in Step 3.

10. Reinstall all molding using rivets (P/N 15661614 and/or P/N 3828472 or equivalent). Rivet quantities vary depending on vehicle model.

11. For Syclone and Typhoon only, install new door decals (P/N 15637832-Syclone or P/N 15661660-Typhoon)(Refer to Step 2 for installation instructions).
