Removal and Replacement
NOTE: If the transmission is being lowered for clearance, perform removal steps 1-9 and installation steps 12-19.
SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED
^ J-21366, Converter holding strap.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner; and the TV cable from the throttle linkage, if the transmission is being removed.
3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and drain transmission fluid.
4. Shift linkage.
5. Rear propeller shaft and front propeller shaft from the transfer case.
6. The support bracket at the catalytic converter and any other components as needed for clearance.
7. Support the transmission, and the transfer case with a transmission jack.
8. Transmission crossmember.
CAUTION: Do not stretch or damage any cables, wires or other components when lowering the transmission.
9. Transmission far enough for clearance to reach other components.
10. Dipstick tube and the seal. Cover the opening in the transmission.
11. Speedometer harness connector and vacuum modulator line.
12. Electrical connectors from the transmission.
13. Cooler lines. Cap all openings in the transmission and the lines.
14. Transfer case shifter and move it aside.
15. Transmission support braces, noting the location of the braces, as they must be installed in the same positions.
16. Converter housing cover. Mark the flywheel and the torque converter alignment.
17. Flywheel to torque converter screws.
18. Support the engine with a jack stand and remove the transmission to engine screws.
19. Note the location of any brackets or clips and move them aside. Slide the transmission straight back of the locating pins (A) and install J-21366.
20. Transmission from the vehicle.
21. Clean transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth, do not allow solvent to enter the transmission. Clean all hardware and flywheel cover using solvent. Air dry.
Inspect The Following:
^ All parts for wear and damage.
^ All seals and fittings for signs of leakage.
^ Torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts or screw holes.
^ Transmission case for porosity.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Be sure the torque converter is seated properly and that J-21366 is in place. Support the transmission, and the transfer case with a transmission jack.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove J-21366.
3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins (A) while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
4. Transmission to engine screws except the screw with the dipstick tube bracket and tighten to 32 Nm (23 ft lbs). All brackets, clips and harnesses must be positioned as they were when removed.
5. Flywheel to torque converter screws. Finger tighten and insure proper converter seating. Then, tighten to 63 Nm (46 ft lbs).
6. Remove the engine hoist or jack and install the converter housing cover. Hook the cover under the lip of the engine oil pan.
7. Transmission support braces. The braces must be installed in the positions from which they were removed.
8. . Transfer case and shifter.
9. Uncover the openings and connect cooler lines. Do not twist or bend the lines.
10. Vacuum modulator line and speedometer harness connector.
11. Electrical connectors to the transmission.
12. Uncover the opening and install the dipstick tube seal and then the dipstick tube. Install and tighten the final transmission to engine screw to 32 Nm (23 ft lbs).
CAUTION: Do not pinch or damage any cables, wires or other components when raising the transmission.
13. Transmission crossmember and the transmission mount. Any components that were removed for clearance.
14. Remove the transmission jack and install the support bracket at the catalytic converter.
15. Rear propeller shaft and front propeller shaft to the transfer case.
16. Shift linkage and lower the vehicle.
17. New transmission fluid.
18. Air cleaner, and the TV cable, if removed.
19. Negative battery cable.
