A/T - 700R4 Low And Reverse Clutch Failure

TSB 87-44 (Jul)

SUBJECT: 700 R4

PROBLEM:

Repeat failure of low and reverse clutches on transmissions with an auxiliary valve body (starting with 1987 models).

POSSIBLE CAUSE:

Installing the number 5 checkball in the valve body, instead of the proper location in the auxiliary valve body.

The valve body looks the same, and it appears that a checkball should be installed in the bathtub located toward the rear of the valve body (See illustration).

If a check ball is installed in that location, the low and reverse clutch piston will not be able to exhaust properly. This may allow the low and reverse clutches to drag, when the vehicle is moving forward, after the transmission has been in reverse.

This applies only to transmissions with an auxiliary valve body.
