FRONT AXLE SHAFT

Fig. 3 Removing & Installing Axle Shaft & U-joint:

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove brake caliper and position aside. Do not allow caliper to hang from brake hose.
4. Remove hub lock mechanism, then the gears and snap rings.
5. Remove rotor.
6. Remove inner bearing and seal.
7. Remove splash shield, brake bracket, spindle and backing plate.
8. Withdraw axle shaft from housing, Fig. 3.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications, then adjust wheel bearings as outlined under STEERING SUSPENSION CHASSIS AND BODY COMPONENTS/FRONT SUSPENSION/ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES/WHEEL BEARING.
