SUBJECT:
POWER STEERING GEAR LASH ADJUSTING SCREW
MODELS:
CERTAIN 1992 C/K VEHICLES (ALL PLANTS) AND G VEHICLES BUILT AT SCARBOROUGH ASSEMBLY (VIN 4)
General Motors has determined that certain 1992 C/K and G vehicles were built with a power steering gear lash adjusting screw which does not meet specifications.
To check if the screw meets specifications, the screw should be subjected to a 25 lb. ft. (34 N-m.) torque. If the screw does not pass this test, the entire gear assembly must be replaced.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are all 1992 C/K and G vehicles with power steering built within the following VIN breakpoints:
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward. Dealers are to correct all affected vehicles in new and used vehicle stock prior to their sale.
Should vehicles be sold inadvertently from your new vehicle inventory, prior to repair, owners are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
There will be no owner letter sent out with this campaign. It is anticipated the vehicles will still be in your new vehicle inventory and should be repaired prior to retail sale. If a unit has been retailed, in order to maintain customer satisfaction, contact the owner immediately and arrange to correct this condition on his/her vehicle.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
To check if the power steering gear lash adjusting screw meets specifications:
1. Raise the hood.
2. Using a 5/8 inch socket and torque wrench, apply a 25 lb. ft. (34 N-m.) torque to the Lash Adjuster Nut. This nut is on the Adjuster Screw which is located on the center of the steering gear side cover.
3. If the screw does not break go to step 4.
If the screw breaks, replace the power steering gear using the procedure in the appropriate Service Manual section 3B1 under "STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT".
4. Install a Campaign Identification Label.
