SUBJECT: NEW SEAT BELT RESTRAINT SYSTEM

MODELS: ALL 1992 VEHICLES EXCEPT TOPKICK/KODIAK

To enhance seat belt comfort and promote seat belt use, a new seat belt retractor has been designed which provides a reduced but constant force against the occupant's body without use of the traditional window shade comfort feature.

A new seat belt system has been designed that has a reduced spring load in the shoulder belt retractor which results in a minimal but constant force against the occupant's upper torso and eliminates the need for tension relief through the traditional window shade comfort feature.
NOTICE: Users should continue to exercise care during belt release in order to avoid interior damage to the belt or the vehicle and to avoid twisting the webbing.

Sales and service personnel should be aware that this system went into effect in 1991 on C/K, R/V, and G light duty vehicles. For 1992, this system will be placed on all light and medium duty vehicles except the Topkick/Kodiak models which will retain the traditional window shade comfort feature. Sales and service personnel should be aware of these changes in order to address any customer questions that may occur as a result of the change and to help General Motors promote effective use of safety belts.
