Clutch: Service and Repair

Fig. 1 Clutch-to-flywheel Attaching Bolts:

The hydraulic clutch system uses a constant running throw-out bearing which rides against the diaphragm fingers on the pressure plate. After a period of time, the ball stud in which the fork pivots will become dry from lack of lubrication and cause noisy operation.
To repair this condition it will be necessary to replace the clutch plate, (part No. 15608692), ball stud (part No. 14036046), clutch fork (part No. 1407374) and disc (part No. 15608690 on 2.5L/4-151 engine, or 15608691 on 2.8L/V6-173 engine.
1. Remove slave cylinder mounting bolts and position cylinder aside.
2. Remove transmission assembly as outlined under TRANSMISSION.
3. Remove bellhousing.
4. Slide clutch fork from ball stud and remove fork from dust boot.
5. Use clutch disc alignment tool No. J-33034 or equivalent.
6. Look for ``X'' mark on flywheel and on clutch cover or white painted letter on clutch cover. If marks are not evident, mark flywheel and clutch cover for proper alignment during assembly.
7. Loosen clutch-to-flywheel attaching bolts evenly, Fig. 1, one turn at a time, until spring pressure is released. Then remove bolts, clutch and pressure plate assembly.
8. Clean pressure plate and flywheel mating surfaces and inspect flywheel for defects. Replace or repair as needed.
9. Reverse procedure to install.
