Clutch - Early Wear-Out/Clutch Chatter/Shudder on Launch

File In Section: 7 - Transmission

Bulletin No.: 66-73-03

Date: September, 1996

Subject:
Early Clutch Wear-Out and/or Clutch Chatter/Shudder on Launch
(Install Clutch Kit)

Models:
1992-95 Chevrolet and GMC C/K, P3 Models with 6.5L Diesel Engine (VINs F, P - RPOs L65, L49) and Manual Transmission

Condition

Early wear-out of the clutch. The vehicle may also have clutch chatter or shudder when launching from a stop.

Correction

The following components should be installed:

^ Clutch kit with more wear resistant facing material and revised tuning (disc and pressure plate assembly)

^ Release bearing with a steel sleeve

^ Release fork with corrected fork tip radius

^ New pilot bearing

If the flywheel shows signs of excessive wear, a secondary flywheel replacement kit is available through GMSPO as P/N 15958496. This secondary flywheel kit should be used rather than replacing the complete Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) assembly.

Service Procedure

Follow the appropriate Service Manual procedure, Section 7C, Clutch, for clutch assembly replacement. Section 6A6, 6.5L Diesel contains instructions for secondary flywheel replacement.

Notice:
Align the light side of the pressure plate assembly, identified by a paint dot near a bolt hole, with the heavy side of the flywheel, identified by an "X". Tighten each pressure plate bolt one turn at a time to evenly compress the spring and avoid warping the pressure plate assembly.

Torque the pressure plate bolts to 34 N.m (25 lb ft) following the Service Manual procedure.
