Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 9 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Loosen air conditioning compressor and bracket, then position aside.
4. Remove AIR pump and bracket.
5. Remove alternator and brackets and position aside.
6. Remove power steering pump and bracket and position aside.
7. Remove exhaust manifold.
8. Remove rocker arm cover.
9. Remove spark plugs.
10. Remove AIR pipe bolts from cylinder head.
11. Remove ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
12. Remove sensor electrical connector from cylinder head.
13. Remove pushrods from cylinder head. Keep pushrods on a clean workbench. Ensure to install pushrods in order removed into cylinder from which they were removed.
14. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat cylinder head bolts with sealer.
b. Torque cylinder head bolts in three step procedure following sequence shown in Fig. 9. First torque to 30 ft. lbs., then to 60 ft. lbs. and finally to 80 ft. lbs.
c. On 1988-90 models, adjust valves.
