Owner Letter

June, 1997

Dear Chevrolet/GMC Customer,

This notice is sent to inform you that General Motors is conducting a voluntary emission recall campaign that may include your vehicle.

Reason For This Recall:
Certain 1993 M, L vans equipped with 4.3L engines (RPO L35 - VIN Code W) and California emissions equipment (RPO NB2) may be emitting non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) in excess of California emission standards. Excess emissions may cause a vehicle to fail California state mandated emission tests.

What Will Be Done:
If your vehicle is registered in the state of California, your GM dealer will correct this condition by replacing the catalytic converter beads. This service will be performed for you at no charge.

If your vehicle is registered outside the state of California, it is not necessary that you have the service performed. Your vehicle complies with all Federal Environmental Protection Agency requirements and does not require catalytic converter bead replacement. If you intend to continue to register your vehicle outside California, you are requested to complete the enclosed reply card and return it to Chevrolet/GMC. This will remove your vehicle from this recall campaign. However, if you intend to register your vehicle in California in the future, do not return the card. Before you register your vehicle in California, contact a California Chevrolet/GMC dealer and they will perform the required service to complete this recall at no charge to you.

Contacting Your Dealer:
If your vehicle is registered in the state of California, please contact your GM dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date and to assure parts availability. Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. The labor time necessary to perform this service correction is approximately 45 minutes. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.

Should your dealer be unable to schedule a service date within a reasonable time, you should contact the appropriate Customer Assistance/Relations Center at the listed number shown:

Customer Reply Card:
The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary inspection/correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.

Emission Law Information (Applicable only to vehicles registered in California or vehicles to be registered in the future in California):
In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made available to your vehicle by California Law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Also, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test if the recall work is not accomplished.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires vehicle emission recall campaigns be completed prior to California registration renewal. Uncorrected emission recall campaigns will result in your not being able to renew your California vehicle registration.

At the time of emission campaign completion, your California dealer will issue a "Proof of Correction Certificate". Keep this certificate and, if required, present it to the Department of Motor Vehicles when renewing your California registration as proof of campaign completion.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
