Owner Letter

Dear GMC Truck Owner:

As a valued customer, your complete satisfaction with your GMC truck is our goal. In keeping with this goal, we want to let you know that we have discovered a problem that could affect your vehicle and we want to take care of it at no charge to you.

General Motors has determined that CERTAIN 1993 Safari and Vandura Vans may experience a condition, at temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, where the transmission will not shift out of PARK with the brake pedal depressed. The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed.

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers will replace the cruise control vacuum release valve and check and adjust the BTSI solenoid cable as needed.

Instructions for performing this service have been sent to your GMC Truck dealer, and parts are available. Please contact your GMC dealer to arrange a service date as soon as possible. This procedure will take about one hour to complete, but you should ask how much additional time your dealer will need to schedule and process your vehicle.

If you experience this condition prior to this repair, please use the following procedure to by-pass the BTSI condition:

Review positions in ignition switch. Refer to your 1993 Owners Manual (Safari Van Owners Manual, pages 2-13 and 2-14. Vandura Van Owners Manual, pages 2-18, and 2-27).

1. Start the engine.

2. Turn the key to "OFF" (one click forward from the "Lock" position).

3. With brakes applied and parking brake engaged, shift to neutral.

4. Start the engine.

5. Shift to desired gear.

6. Release parking brake.

The enclosed postage paid owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please furnish us the complete name and address of the person you sold or traded your vehicle to and return the card to us.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our product.
