Condition

Some owners may comment that the rear seat back is loose and rattles. This condition is most noticeable when braking as tile back of the rear seat moves forward and rattles against the seat latch.

Cause

The seat latch mechanism allows the seat back to move when the seat is in the latched position.

Correction

This condition can be eliminated by installing a rear seat latch kit. The kit adds a ball plunger and catch mechanism to the side of each seat latch. A catch attached to the latch base has a slot that seats the ball. The pressure exerted by the ball retains the seat back in position, eliminating the movement/noise. The additional force needed to overcome the ball plunger is minimal. The service kit contains one (1) LH support bracket, one (1) RH support bracket, two (2) ball plungers, two (2) bases, two (2) rubber bumpers and one (1) instruction sheet. The following service procedure should be performed on both sides of the rear seat.

Service Procedure

1. Remove trim cover.

2. Remove nuts (2 per side) from weld studs to remove seat from floor.

3. Remove bolt/screw from latch assembly.

4. Thread the ball plunger into the support bracket with the ball end oriented as shown (Figure 1, Item 6).

5. Attach support bracket to latch assembly by reinstalling bolt/screw.

6. Reinstall the latch assembly onto the weld studs.

7. Install the base over the rear weld stud orienting as shown (Figure 1, Item 8). Reinstall nut on the rear weld stud.

B. Reinstall nut on front weld stud.

9. Make necessary adjustments by adjusting the ball plunger and/or the support base.

10. Trim or file the rubber bumper to decrease its thickness, if necessary, to ensure that the ball plunger has engagement into the base (Figure 2). Additional bumpers are provided in the service kit if it should become necessary to replace them.

11. Modify trim cover to clear the support bracket. Use the template to determine the amount of modification necessary (Figure 3, Item 1).

12. Reinstall trim cover.
