Rear Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (RWAL)

DISPLAYING ABS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES WITH SCAN TOOL (RWAL)

Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be displayed manually by grounding the data link connector (DLC).

ALDL Connector Terminal Identification.:

Ground terminal "H to terminal "A" of the DLC, Fig. 14, and count the brake lamp flashes. The terminals must be grounded for approximately 20 seconds before the diagnostic trouble code will begin to flash. Count the number of short flashes starting from the long flash, include the long flash in the count. Sometimes the first count will be short. However, subsequent counts will be accurate.

NOTE: Manual grounding should only be done when the brake lamp is on.

NOTE: Diagnostic Trouble Codes 6, 9 and 10 will only turn the brake lamp on while the fault exists. These diagnostic trouble codes are soft and can only be read using a TECH 1 scan tool. Do not manually ground terminal "H" to terminal "A" if the brake lamp is not on. Grounding the DLC with the brake lamp off will set a false Diagnostic Trouble Code 9, which will turn the brake lamp on and disable the anti-lock system.
