Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence 454:






1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Loosen air conditioning compressor and bracket, then position aside.
4. Remove AIR pump and bracket.
5. Remove alternator and brackets and position aside.
6. Remove power steering pump and bracket and position aside.
7. Remove exhaust manifold.
8. Remove rocker arm cover and spark plugs.
9. Remove AIR pipe bolts from cylinder head.
10. Remove ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
11. Remove sensor electrical connector from cylinder head.
12. Remove pushrods from cylinder head. Keep pushrods on a clean workbench. Install pushrods in cylinders from which they were removed.
13. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat cylinder head bolts with sealer.
b. Using sequence shown in Fig. 7, tighten cylinder head bolts in three steps: in first step, torque to 30 ft. lbs., in second step, torque to 60 ft. lbs. and, finally, torque to 80 ft. lbs. in third step.
