Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Service and Repair
Idle Air Control Valve:
NOTES: The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is an electrical component and must not be soaked in any liquid cleaner or solvent. Otherwise damage could result. On IAC valves that have been in service: DO NOT push or pull on the IAC valve pintle. The force required to move the pintle may damage the threads on the worm drive.
REMOVAL:
- Remove air cleaner assembly, extension (spacer) and gasket.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
- Remove the screw assemblies and IAC valve.
- Remove IAC valve.
CLEANING:
- Clean IAC valve O-ring sealing surface, pintle seat and sir passage.
- Use carburetor cleaner and a parts cleaning brush to remove carbon deposits. Do NOT use a cleaner that contains methyl ethyl ketone, which is an extremely strong solvent, and NOT necessary for this type of deposit.
- Shiny spots on the pintle or seat are normal and do not indicate misalignment or a bent pintle shaft.
- If air passage has heavy deposits, remove the throttle body for complete cleaning.
INSPECTION:
- Inspect the IAC valve O-ring for cuts, cracks or distortion, and replace if damaged.
NOTE: If installing a new IAC valve, be sure to replace with an identical part. IAC valve pintle shape and diameter are designed for the specific application.
MEASUREMENT:
- Measure the distance between tip of IAC valve pintle and mounting flange (dimension A in image).
- If greater than 28 mm, use finger pressure to slowly retract pintle. The force required to retract the pintle of a new valve will not cause damage to the valve.
INSTALLATION:
- Lubricate IAC valve O-ring with engine oil and install the IAC valve.
- Install the IAC valve assembly into the throttle body.
- Install the IAC attaching screws. Tighten screw assemblies to 3.2 Nm (28.0 lb.in.).
- Reconnect the electrical connector to the IAC valve.
- Install the gasket, air cleaner extension (spacer), and air cleaner assembly.
- Reset IAC valve pintle position:
- Disconnect the battery cable at battery for 10 seconds then reconnect cable.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF for 5 seconds.
- Ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
