Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence 454:
1. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds. Refer to, Engine/Intake Manifold/Service and Repair Intake Manifold
Refer to Exhaust System/Exhaust Manifold/Service and Repair also Exhaust Manifold
2. Unfasten alternator and position aside.
3. Remove AIR pump, then the AIR pump/alternator bracket.
4. On models with power steering, remove power steering pump with bracket, and position aside.
5. Remove exhaust manifold as previously described.
6. On models equipped with A/C, unfasten A/C compressor and bracket and position aside.
7. Remove rocker arm cover, then the spark plugs.
8. Remove AIR pipe bolts from rear of cylinder head.
9. Disconnect ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
10. Remove pushrods, then the cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder head.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Thoroughly clean block and head mating surfaces.
b. Install new head gasket over block dowel pins with bead up. If using a steel gasket, apply a thin, even coat of sealer to both sides of gasket. If using a composition gasket, do not use any sealer.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with a suitable sealing compound,
d. Torque each cylinder head bolt to 80 ft. lbs., a small amount at a time, using sequence shown in Fig. 10.
