Removal and Installation

1. Drain transmission fluid, then remove shift control lever and boot.

2. Raise vehicle on a hoist, then remove propeller shaft(s).

3. Remove parking brake controls and exhaust pipes as necessary to gain clearance, then any transmission electrical connectors.

4. Remove transfer case as described under "Transfer Case, Replace." Refer to Transfer Case/Replace.

5. Remove speedometer cable or speed sensor from transmission case.

6. On models with hydraulic clutch system, remove clutch actuator and position aside.

7. Remove any inspection covers and vent tubes.

8. Remove crossmember, then the bolts and washers securing transmission to engine block or clutch housing. Remove transmission, noting the following:

a. Do not allow transmission to hang from clutch assembly

b. Pull transmission straight back on clutch hub splines. Guide studs may be used in bolt holes to keep transmission aligned properly.

c. Support clutch release bearing.

9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Shift transmission into Neutral position before installing.
