Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder head bolts should only be loosened when engine is cold. Do not reuse old cylinder head bolts.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant.
2. Remove air filter housing assembly, then remove coolant reservoir tank.
3. Remove fuel vapor pipe assembly. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
4. Remove serpentine belt and front timing cover upper attaching bolts.
5. Loosen serpentine belt tensioner and place aside.
6. Remove upper radiator hose, then upper and lower fan shrouds.
7. Remove fan assembly and multiple ribbed drive belt.
8. Remove coolant pump and heater hose from intake manifold and thermostat housing.
9. Remove thermostat housing, then alternator support brace and wires.
10. Remove power steering support brace, then A/C compressor with brackets and position aside.
11. Remove accessory support bracket with alternator and power steering pump attached. Position aside.
12. Disconnect throttle cable and support linkage.
13. Disconnect heater hose at coolant pump.
14. Remove oil fill tube, then disconnect exhaust pipe and oxygen sensor.
15. Remove exhaust manifold bolts and manifold.
16. Disconnect wiring and vacuum hoses from upper intake manifold, then remove upper manifold.
17. Disconnect wiring from lower intake manifold, then disconnect fuel lines and spark plug wires. Place shop towel over fuel lines and fitting when disconnecting.
18. Remove lower intake manifold.
19. Remove rocker arm cover, then rocker arms and pushrods. Be sure to mark original location of rockers and pushrods for installation.
20. Disconnect engine lift bracket from rear of engine, then remove cylinder head bolts and studs. Remove cylinder head.
21. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence, Fig. 2, to 46 ft. lbs. for long bolts and 43 ft. lbs. for short bolts. Tighten all bolts an additional 90.0 degrees in sequence.
