Vehicle Control Module (VCM) Replacement
Control Module VCM PUP:
Servicing VCM:
PROM Unit:
PROM Unit Socket:
NOTE
[a] Service is limited to replacement of control module. If the diagnostics call for replacement of the control module, it will be necessary to transfer the PROM (MEM-CAL) and program the EEPROM in the control module. Programming of the EEPROM will NOT possible without "Techline" terminal/equipment.
[b] When replacing a production control module with a service controller, transfer the broadcast DTC and production control module part number to the controller label. DO NOT record information on the access cover.
CAUTION
[a] The ignition must be "OFF," when disconnecting or reconnecting the control module connector, to prevent internal damage to the control module.
[b] To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge to the control module, Do NOT touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit boards.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Disconnect control module harness connectors.
3. Remove control module mounting hardware.
4. Remove control module from engine compartment.
5. Remove new control module from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective control module.
6. PROM removal. Refer to PROM (MEM-CAL) replacement.
NOTE
Replacement control module is supplied without a PROM, so care should be used when removing it from the defective control module, because it will be reused in the new control module.
INSTALLATION
1. Install control module into the engine compartment.
2. Connect the control module harness connectors.
3. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), antilock and brake lamps will continue to be enabled until the control module is programmed. Once programming is complete, the lamps will be turned "OFF" and normal operation will occur.
4. Connect the negative battery terminal.
5. Refer to EEPROM PROGRAMMING.
NOTE This procedure is used only for manual transmission vehicles with a Vehicle Control Module (VCM).
