Tube & Shaft Assembly
FRONT TUBE AND SHAFT ASSEMBLYFig. 1 Exploded View Of Front Axle:
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove left and right stabilizer bracket bolts, then the right stabilizer link assembly.
3. Remove inner tie rod end from relay rod.
4. Remove drive axle flange bolts. Turn wheel out to loosen drive axle from axle tube. Position drive axle aside.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors from tube, then remove skid plate.
6. Drain axle lubricant into a suitable container, then remove axle mounting nuts and washer, Fig. 1.
7. Remove axle tube to carrier bolts, then the axle tube from carrier.
8. Install mounting flange of axle in vise.
9. Remove sleeve (10), connector (8), thrust washer (7), then the axle shaft. Tap axle shaft with soft mallet, if necessary.
10. Using screwdriver, pry out deflector (2) and seal (3).
11. Using bearing remover tool No. J29369-1 or equivalent, and a suitable slide hammer, remove bearing.
12. Reverse procedure to assemble and install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate and install new bearing using bearing installer tool No. J36609, or equivalent.
b. Lubricate and install new seal using seal installer tool No. J36600 or equivalent.
c. Apply sealant part No. 1052942 or equivalent to carrier sealing surface.
d. Tighten bolts/nuts to specifications.
