Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder head tightening sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove intake manifold.
4. Remove exhaust manifold.
5. Remove ground strap from rear of right side cylinder head.
6. Remove AIR pipe from rear of cylinder head.
7. Remove AIR pump bolt and spacer from right side cylinder head.
8. Remove air conditioning compressor attaching bolt and nut from right side cylinder head.
9. Remove fuel pipe, plug wire(s) and wiring harness brackets from rear of right side cylinder head.
10. Remove attaching nut and stud securing main accessory bracket to left side cylinder head. It may be necessary to loosen the remaining attaching bolts and studs to move the bracket forward slightly for clearance to remove the cylinder head.
11. Disconnect coolant sensor electrical connector.
12. Remove spark plug wires from brackets.
13. Remove rocker arm cover and spark plugs.
14. Remove pushrods. Keep pushrods on a clean workbench. Ensure to install pushrods into cylinders from which they were removed.
15. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with sealer.
b. Using sequence shown in Fig. 6, tighten cylinder head bolts in three steps: in first step, torque to 25 ft. lbs., in second step, torque to 45 ft. lbs. and, finally, torque to 65 ft. lbs. in third step.
c. Adjust valves.
