Steering Column - Removal and Installation

REMOVAL












CAUTION: When the column is removed from the vehicle, a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping of the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.

NOTE: Set front wheels in the straight-ahead position and the steering wheel in the "LOCKED" position.

Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR.
3. Transmission control cable from the column.
4. Screws and steering column trim panels.
5. Steering wheel.
6. Nuts from upper and lower support brackets.
7. Lower the steering column.
8. Harness at the connectors.
9. Steering column assembly.
- Rotate the column so the shift lever clears the dash panel opening.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install or connect the following:
1. Lower the end of the steering column through the dash panel opening.
2. Harness to connectors on the steering column.
3. Raise the steering column into place.
- Rotate column up over two upper studs and loosely assemble two nuts.
4. Lower column nuts. Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
5. Upper column nuts. Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
6. Transmission control cable.
7. Steering column trim panel and screws.
8. Steering wheel.
9. Negative battery cable.
10. Enable the SIR system.
