P0500
DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Error:
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS):
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit is of the magnetic induction type. Gear teeth pressed on the outside diameter of the output shaft assembly induce an alternating current in the sensor as the shaft rotates. The signal goes directly to the Vehicle Control Module-A (VCM-A). This pulsing action takes place about 40 times per revolution of output shaft of transmission and the VCM-A will calculate vehicle speed based on the time between pulses. DTC P0500 is a type "A" DTC.
DTC PO5OO WILL SET WHEN
^ No Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) DTCs.
^ Throttle angle below 3%.
^ Engine coolant temperature above 60°C (140°F).
^ Engine speed between 1400 and 4400 RPM.
^ MAP below 20 kPa (6 Hg).
^ All conditions met for 5 seconds.
^ Vehicle speed below 1 mph.
ACTION TAKEN (VCM WILL DEFAULT TO)
None.
DTC PO5OO WILL CLEAR WHEN
The VCM-A will turn the MIL "OFF" after three consecutive trips without a fault condition present. A history DTC will be cleared if no fault conditions have been detected for forty warm-up cycles [coolant temperature has risen 22°C (40°F) from start-up coolant temperature and engine coolant temperature exceeds 71°C (160°F) that same ignition cycle] or the Tech 1 clearing feature has been used.
DTC CHART TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. This step will determine if DTC P0500 is the result of a hard failure or an intermittent condition.
2. This step checks wiring, connections, VCM-A and VSS.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Check proper calibration for speedometer.
