With Vehicle Control Module (VCM-A)

VCM-A Location:






REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Connectors from Vehicle Control Module (VCM-A).
3. The three VCM-A bracket mounting bolts.
4. VCM-A from engine compartment.
5. VCM-A from mounting bracket.
6. VCM-A access cover.
7. Knock Sensor (KS) Calibration Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) removal.

CAUTION: Replacement VCM-A is supplied without a PROM, so care should be used when removing it from the defective VCM-A, because it will be reused in the new VCM-A.


KS Calibration Prom Unit:






Remove PROM by using thumb and first finger, gently squeeze each end of the blue PROM and pull upward.
Do not remove the cover of the KS Calibration PROM. Use of unapproved KS Calibration PROM removal methods may cause damage to the KS Calibration PROM or socket.


VCM-A Knock Sensor Removal:






INSPECT
^ For alignment notches of the KS Calibration PROM and carefully set it aside. Do not open the KS Calibration PROM.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. New VCM-A from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective VCM-A.
2. Access cover.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. KS Calibration PROM in KS Calibration PROM socket.

NOTE: Press only on the ends of the KS Calibration PROM. Small notches in the KS Calibration PROM must be aligned with the small notches in the KS Calibration PROM socket. Gently press on KS Calibration PROM until it is firmly seated in the socket. Listen for the click.

2. Access cover on VCM-A.
3. VCM-A to mounting bracket.
4. VCM-A in engine compartment.
5. The three VCM-A bracket mounting bolts.
6. Connectors to VCM-A.
7. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), antilock and brake lamps will continue to be enabled until the VCM-A is programmed. Once programming is complete, the lamps will be turned "OFF" and normal operation will occur.
8. Negative battery cable.
9. Proceed to EEPROM Programming. Service and Repair


NOTE: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the KS Calibration PROM, Do Not touch the component leads, and Do Not remove integrated circuit
