Knock Sensor: Service and Repair

KNOCK SENSORS
The knock sensors are located in various areas of the cylinder heads on the 4.3L engine. On 4.3L applications the knock sensors are installed in a hole which is exposed to engine coolant. Care should be exercised when servicing these sensors.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Wiring harness connector from knock sensor.
4. Knock sensor from cylinder head.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Knock sensor into cylinder head and torque to 19 Nm (14 lb ft).

NOTE: Apply water base caulk to sensor threads. Do not use silicon tape as this will insulate sensor from the engine block.)

2. Wiring harness connector to the knock sensor.
3. Negative battery cable.
4. Refill cooling system if required.

NOTE: On knock sensors which are mounted in the end of the cylinder head, draining the cooling system will not be necessary.
