Steering Column Replacement (Standard)
Remove
Important: Remove only those components necessary to do repairs.
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Two washer head screws.
3. Dimmer switch assembly from dimmer switch actuator rod.
4. Flat head screw.
5. Ignition switch assembly from switch actuator rod.
6. Vehicle wire harness from ignition switch.
Install
NOTICE: Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying required torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.
1. Lock cylinder set to "OFF-LOCK" position.
NOTICE: Install ignition switch assembly with switch in "OFF-LOCK" position. New ignition switch will be pinned in "OFF-LOCK" position. Remove plastic pin after switch is assembled to column. Failure to do so may cause switch damage.
Adjust
A. Move switch slider to extreme right position.
B. Move switch slider one detent to left "OFF-LOCK" position.
C. Install 3/32-inch drill bit in hole on switch to limit travel.
2. Ignition switch assembly to cable & actuator assembly.
3. Flat head screw.
Tighten
Tighten screws to 4.0 N.m (35 lb.in.).
4. Remove drill bit from ignition switch.
5. Dimmer switch assembly to dimmer switch rod.
6. Two washer head screws, tighten finger tight.
7. Adjust dimmer switch.
Adjust
A. Place 3/32-inch drill bit in hole on switch to limit travel.
B. Position switch on column and push against dimmer switch rod to remove all lash.
C. Remove drill bit.
8. Vehicle wire harness to ignition switch.
9. Negative battery cable.
10. Do Adjust and Inspect Interlock Solenoid Assembly.
11. If all service operations are completed, enable the SIR system.
Interlock Solenoid Adjust and Inspect
Adjust
A. Lock cylinder to "OFF" position.
B. Shift column out of "PARK" position.
C. The locking button must be disengaged to allow cable movement. Push cable towards solenoid until the bowl lock hits bowl and travel stops. (Do not bow or bend inner cable wire between cable housing and cable fitting)
^ Let cable move back 1.0 to 2.0 mm.
^ Engage locking button.
Important: During Inspection and Adjustment of interlock solenoid assembly, solenoid will become hot.
Inspect
^ Funtion check Interlock Solenoid assembly for proper operation.
^ Solenoid must lock gearshift lever bowl assembly whenever steering column is in "PARK" and when trying to shift from "PARK" without pressing brake pedal. (Solenoid is energized when ignition is on and solenoid is extended)
^ Solenoid must release gearshift lever bowl assembly when pressure is applied to brake pedal. (Solenoid is de-energized)
^ Readjust if needed.
