General Description

DESCRIPTION
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) contains a permanent magnet surrounded by a coil of wire producing a magnetic field which is interrupted by rotor teeth pressed on the output shaft in the transmission. As each rotor tooth nears the coil, the coil produces an AC voltage pulse. As the vehicle speed increases the number of AC voltage pulses per second increases. This device is used to provide an output shaft speed signal to the control module. The control module uses the VSS signal input to:

^ Calculate vehicle speed, trans output speed, and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) slip speed.
^ Control shift quality.
