PCM REPLACEMENT/PROGRAMMING
The service of the PCM should normally consist of either the replacement of the PCM and the re-programming of the Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) or a Knock Sensor (KS) module change.
Whenever the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, check the PCM first in order to see if it is the correct part. If the part is correct, remove the KS module from the faulty PCM and install it in the new service PCM. The service PCM will not contain a KS module. Whenever a DTC PO325 sets, check the KS module for proper installation.
^ Refer to the latest Techline Procedure when reprogramming the PCM.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the PCM retainer attaching bolts (2).
3. Remove the PCM electrical connector.
4. Slide the PCM and retainer from the PCM bracket.
5. Remove the retainer from the PCM.
CAUTION: Before removing the KS module cover, carefully clean the PCM housing of any debris that may cause damage to the PCM circuitry.
6. Remove the KS module cover.
CAUTION: In order to prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM or KS module, do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.
7. Remove the KS module.
KS REMOVE/INSTALL
1. Remove the new PCM from the packaging.
2. Check the service number in order to make sure it is the same number as the defective PCM.
3. Remove the KS module cover.
4. Install the KS module in the KS module socket.
5. Install the KS module cover.
Tighten
^ Tighten the KS module cover screws to 2.8-3.2 Nm (25-28 lb. in.).
6. Slide the PCM into the PCM retainer.
7. Install the PCM electrical connectors.
8. Slide the PCM retainer into the PCM bracket slots.
9. Install the PCM retainer attaching bolts.
Tighten
^ Tighten the PCM retainer attaching bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb. ft.).
