Removal and Replacement




Transmission Replacement

Tool Required
J 21366 Converter Holding Strap

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Transmission fluid from the transmission via the oil pan.
3. Shift cable from transmission control lever and bracket.
4. Rear propeller shaft.

^ Support the transmission with a transmission jack.





5. Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member
6. Two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
7. Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds.





8. Three bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.





9. Bolt, clip, and strap securing the three fuel lines and transmission vent hose to the transmission case.





10. Nine bolts securing the transmission to engine.
11. Oil filler tube and the seal from the transmission.

^ Plug the oil filler tube opening in the transmission.

12. Transmission cooler lines from the transmission.

^ Plug both transmission cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.

13. Wiring harness connector from the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.

^ Remove all vehicle harness wires, harness clips, tubes, brackets, and lines that may interfere with the removal of the transmission from the vehicle.

Important
^ Support the engine with a jack stand before detaching the transmission from the engine.

14. Transmission from the vehicle.

Clean
^ Transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth. Do not allow solvent to enter the transmission. Air dry.
^ All hardware and flywheel cover using solvent. Air dry.

Inspect
^ All parts for wear and damage.
^ All seals and fittings for signs of wear.
^ Torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts.
^ Transmission case for cracks.

Install or Connect

Tools Required:
J 21366 Converter Holding Strap





1. Nine bolts securing the transmission to engine.

^ Ensure that the torque converter is seated properly and that J 21366 is in place.
^ Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366.
^ Support the transmission with a transmission jack
^ Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

Important
^ The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
^ All brackets, clips, and harnesses must be positioned as they were when removed.
^ Do not install the oil filler tube.

Tighten
Transmission to engine bolts 47 Nm (34 lb. ft.).

2. Wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.

^ Position/install all vehicle harness wires, harness clips, tubes, brackets, and lines that were removed or moved prior to the transmission removal.

3. Transmission cooler lines.

^ Ensure that both transmission case cooling line plugs are removed from the transmission case cooling line connectors.

4. Transmission oil filler tube and seal.

^ Ensure that the oil filler tube plug is removed from the transmission case.





5. Bolt, clip, and strap securing the three fuel lines and transmission vent hose to the transmission case.





6. Three bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.

Tighten
Bolts finger tight to insure proper converter seating.
Bolts to 63 Nm (46 lb. ft.).

Tighten
Bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb. ft.).

7. Exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifolds support brackets.





8. Two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.

Tighten
Bolts to 47 Nm (35 lb. ft.).





9. Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member.

Tighten
Bolts to 52 Nm (38 lb. ft.).

10. Remove the transmission jack and engine support stands.
11. Rear propeller shaft.
12. Shift cable to the transmission shift lever and bracket.

^ Lower the vehicle.

13. New transmission fluid.
14. Negative battery cable to the negative post on the battery.
