Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

RIGHT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Remove exhaust manifold.
4. Remove AIR pipe from rear of cylinder head.
5. Remove AIR pump attaching bolt and spacer from cylinder head.
6. Remove engine accessory bracket bolts and studs from cylinder head.
7. Remove wiring harness and clip from rear of cylinder head.
8. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.
9. Remove valve cover and pushrods.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head and gasket.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On models equipped with engine using a steel gasket, apply a suitable sealant to both sides of gasket.
b. On models equipped with engine using a steel asbestos gasket, do not use any sealant on gasket.
c. Apply suitable sealing compound to cylinder head bolt threads prior to installation.
d. Using sequence shown in Fig. 10, torque cylinder head bolts in three steps: first to 25 ft. lbs., then to 45 ft. lbs. and, finally, to 65 ft. lbs.


LEFT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Remove exhaust manifold.
4. Remove AIR pipe from rear of cylinder head.
5. Remove engine accessory bracket bolts and studs from cylinder head. It may be necessary to loosen remaining bracket bolts to provide clearance for head removal.
6. Remove fuel pipes and brackets from rear of cylinder head.
7. Disconnect coolant sensor electrical connector, then remove cruise control transducer bracket, if equipped.
8. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.
9. Remove valve cover and pushrods.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head and gasket.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On models equipped with engine using a steel gasket, apply a suitable sealant to both sides of gasket.
b. On models equipped with engine using a steel asbestos gasket, do not use any sealant on gasket.
c. Apply suitable sealing compound to cylinder head bolt threads prior to installation.
d. Using sequence shown in Fig. 10, torque cylinder head bolts in three steps: first to 25 ft. lbs., then to 45 ft. lbs. and, finally, to 65 ft. lbs.
