Transmission Fluid Leak (Replace Transmission)

Models:
1996 Chevrolet and GMC Truck C/K, M/L, S/T, G Models with HYDRA-MATIC 4L60-E Transmission (RPO M30) and 4.3L Engine (VINs W, X - RPOs L35 and LF6)





Condition (Figure 1)

Some owners with vehicles built before August 26, 1995 (Julian date 238) and a HYDRA-MATIC 4L60E transmission with a two-piece case, may experience a fluid leak in the rear of the transmission.





Cause (Figure 2)

Porosity in the rear case area.

Correction

The transmission fluid must be at operating temperature. Verify the leak by using transmission fluid die (J 28431-22) and black light (J 28428-E). If the leak is in the area shown in Figure 2, replace the transmission with a GM Goodwrench transmission.
