Preliminary Diagnosis
The following tests are designed for engines and batteries at normal operating temperatures and assumes that there are no engine conditions which would cause a no-start symptom. The Battery must be in a charged state with surface charge removed before doing diagnosis. To use the tests under other conditions could result in misdiagnosis. Remove the Battery's surface charge if the Battery was recently charged. Prior to performing System Diagnostics, perform the On-Board Diagnostic System check described in the Driveability and Emissions for the specific engine. Ensure that no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM, Diesel Engines) or the Vehicle Control Module (VCM, Gasoline Engines) which may lead to misdiagnosis in diagnostics. Refer to the temperature table in Battery to identify the expected Battery voltage at current temperatures.
