4L80-E Automatic Transmission
^ Tool Required:- J 21366 Converter Holding Strap
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Transmission oil from the transmission.
3. Shift cable from the transmission control lever and bracket.
4. Rear propeller shaft.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
5. Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the crossmember.
6. Two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
7. Bolts securing the crossmember to the frame.
8. Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds and the muffler assembly from the exhaust pipe.
9. Four bolts securing the converter pan cover to the transmission.
- Mark the flywheel and the torque converter alignment.
10. Six bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.
11. Transmission vent hose and wiring harness from the transmission.
12. Oil level indicator tube and the seal from the transmission.
- Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
13. Transmission cooler lines from the transmission.
- Plug both transmission cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
14. Wiring harness connectors from the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
- Remove all vehicle harness wires, harness clips, tubes, brackets, and lines that may interfere with the removal of the transmission from the vehicle.
- Position J 21366 converter holding strap onto the torque converter to keep it from sliding of the transmission turbine shaft.
Important: Ensure the engine is supported with a jack stand before detaching the transmission from the engine.
15. Stud and bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
- Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
Clean
- Transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth. Do not allow the solvent to enter the transmission. Air dry.
- All hardware and flywheel cover using solvent. Air dry.
Inspect
- All parts for wear and damage.
- All seals and fittings for signs of wear.
- Torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts.
- Transmission case for cracks.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Stud and bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Ensure that the torque converter is seated properly and that J 21366 is in place.
- Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
Important:
^ The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
^ All brackets, clips, and harnesses must be positioned as they were when removed.
^ Do not install the oil level indicator tube.
- Tighten transmission to engine stud and bolts to 47 Nm (34 ft. lbs.).
2. Wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
- Position/install all vehicle harness wires, harness clips, tubes, brackets, and lines that were removed or moved prior to the transmission removal.
3. Transmission oil cooler lines.
- Ensure that both transmission case cooling line plugs are removed from the transmission case cooling line connectors.
4. Transmission oil level indicator tube and seal.
- Ensure that the oil level indicator tube plug is removed from the transmission case.
5. Transmission vent hose and wiring harness to the transmission.
6. Six bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.
- Tighten:
^ Bolts finger tight to insure proper converter seating.
^ Bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
7. Four bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
- Tighten converter cover bolts to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
8. Exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifolds and the muffler assembly to the exhaust pipe.
9. Bolts securing the crossmember to the frame.
- Tighten bolts to 77 Nm (56 ft. lbs.).
10. Two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
- Tighten bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
11. Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the crossmember.
- Tighten bolts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
- Remove the transmission jack and engine support stands.
12. Rear propeller shaft.
13. Shift cable to the transmission shift lever and bracket.
- Lower the vehicle.
14. New transmission oil.
15. Negative battery cable.
