Engine Removal

^ Tools Required
- J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket, or equivalent

1. Remove the hood. Refer to Body and Frame.
2. Remove the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the air cleaner box and the intake duct.
4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System.
5. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Cooling System.
7. Remove the radiator and the A/C condenser as an assembly. Refer to Cooling System.
8. Remove the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
9. Remove the accelerator and the cruise control linkages (if equipped).
10. Remove the fuel supply lines at the rear of the intake.
11. Remove the vacuum hoses.
12. Remove the air conditioning compressor and the bracket. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
13. Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle.
14. Remove the front drive shaft (if equipped). Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
15. Remove the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Exhaust System.
16. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starting and Charging.
17. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
18. With an automatic transmission engine, remove the bolts from the flywheel to the torque converter. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
19. Lower the vehicle.
20. Support the transmission.





21. Attach the engine lift bracket to the front of the left cylinder head.





22. Attach the engine lift bracket to the rear of the right cylinder head.

CAUTION: Damage may result from the use of an improper bolt when attaching the engine lift bracket into the cylinder head.

23. Install the attaching bolt and the washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
^ Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
24. Remove the bell/housing to engine bolts.
25. Remove the front engine mount through bolts.
26. Remove the engine.
