Special Tools

CAUTION: In order to avoid deploying the air bag when troubleshooting the SIR system, use only the equipment specified and the instructions given. Failure to use the specified equipment as instructed could cause air bag deployment, personal injury to you or someone else, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

J 38715-A SIR DRIVER/PASSENGER LOAD TOOL
Use J 38715-A SIR Driver/Passenger Load Tool only when the SIR diagnostics call for it. The Load Tool is used as a diagnostic aid and a safety device to prevent inadvertent inflator module deployment.

The load tool has four yellow connectors attached to its case. The three small connectors are electrically functional and serve as resistive load substitutions. The large dummy connector does not serve as a load substitution and is not used.

Use no greater than two connectors at any time. One of the small connectors with adapter J 38715-5 is used to substitute the load of the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. It is connected at the top of the column to the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Another small connector is used to substitute the load of the inflatable restraint steering wheel module and the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. It is connected at the base of the column to the SIR wiring harness. The third small connector is used to substitute for the load of the inflatable restraint I/P module. It is connected to the inflatable restraint I/P module harness connector.

You substitute the resistance of the inflator module to determination whether an inflator circuit component is causing a system malfunction. Use the load tool only when specifically called for in the diagnostic procedures.

J 38715-96 SIR SHORTING BAR TOOL
Use J 38715-96 SIR Shorting Bar Tool only when the SIR diagnostics call for it. The shorting bar tool lifts one side of the shorting bar on the inflatable restraint Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM) harness connector. The Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lifts the opposite side of the shorting bar. When the CPA and the shorting bar tool are installed the warning lamp circuit is disconnected from the ground circuit turning the warning lamp OFF.

J 39200 DVM
J 39200 DVM is the preferred DVM for use in SIR diagnosis and repair. However, J 34029-A may be used if J 39200 is not available. No other DVMs are approved for SIR diagnosis and repair.

SCAN TOOL
The Tech 2 is used for the following reasons:
^ To read and clear SIR system diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
^ To provide SIR system circuit values using the data list function.
Refer to the Tech 2 Operator's Manual for specific information on how to use the Tech 2.
Scan tools from other manufacturers may be used. Refer to the Operator's Manual for the tool for specific instructions.

J 35616-A CONNECTOR TEST ADAPTER KIT
Use J 35616-A Connector Test Adapter Kit whenever a diagnostic procedure requests checking or probing a terminal. Using the appropriate adapter will ensure that no damage to the terminal occurs from the DVM probe, such as spreading or bending. The adapter will also give an idea of whether contact tension is sufficient, helping to find an open or intermittent open due to poor terminal contact.
