SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE

Subject:
Section 9J - Revised Remove/Install Procedure for Inflatable Restraint
I/P Module

Models:
1997 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Models

This bulletin is being issued to revise the Remove/Install Procedure for the Inflatable Restraint I/P Module in Section 9J of the Service Manual.

Inflatable Restraint I/P Module

Live (undeployed) Inflator Module

Refer to Inflator Module Handling/Shipping/Scrapping in Section 9J of the Service Manual.

Deployed Inflator Module

After the inflator module has been deployed, the surface of the air bag may contain a powdery residue. This powder consists primarily of cornstarch (used to lubricate the bag as it inflates) and by-products of the chemical reaction. Sodium hydroxide dust (similar to lye soap) is produced as a by-product of the deployment reaction. The sodium hydroxide then quickly reacts with atmospheric moisture and is converted to sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Therefore, it is unlikely that sodium hydroxide will be present after deployment. As with many service procedures, you should wear gloves and safety glasses. (See Figure 1)

Remove or Disconnect

^ Disable the SIR system, refer to Disabling the SIR System in Section 9J of the Service Manual.

1. Roll forward the instrument panel, refer to Section 8C of the Service Manual.

2. The fasteners attaching the inflatable restraint I/P module to the mounting bracket.

3. The inflatable restraint I/P module from the front of the instrument panel, taking care to keep a firm hold of the module.

4. The yellow 2-way electrical harness connector at the left side of the mounting bracket.

5. The Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the yellow 2-way electrical harness connector.

6. The inflatable restraint I/P module yellow pigtail connector from the yellow 2-way electrical harness connector.

7. The inflatable restraint I/P module from the instrument panel.

Caution:
When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

^ Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module.

^ Make sure the bag opening points away from you.

When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

Install or Connect

1. The inflatable restraint I/P module yellow pigtail connector to the yellow 2-way electrical harness connector.

2. The Connector Position Assurance (CPA).

3. The yellow 2-way electrical harness connector to the mounting on the left side of the mounting bracket.

4. The two new retainer J-clips to the mounting bracket.

5. The inflatable restraint I/P module to the mounting bracket through the front of the instrument panel, using the two retainer J-clips to hold the inflatable restraint I/P module in position.

6. The fasteners to the inflatable restraint I/P module.

Tighten

The fasteners to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).

7. Roll forward the instrument panel, refer to Section 8C of the Service Manual.

Enable the SIR system, refer to Enabling the SIR System in Section 9J of the Service Manual.
