Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Cooling System.
2. Remove the generator and brackets. Refer to Starting and Charging.
3. Remove the crankshaft balancer and hub. Service and Repair





4. Remove the oil pan. Service and Repair
5. Remove Crankshaft pulley and hub. Service and Repair





6. Remove timing cover bolts.





7. Remove the timing cover.
8. Remove crankshaft front oil seal.





9. Clean the sealing surfaces on the engine block.





10. Clean the sealing surfaces on the timing cover.





11. Clean the sealing surfaces on the front of the oil pan.
12. Remove any loose RTV.
13. Remove any piece of the old RTV that may interfere with installation.
14. Use a suitable solvent to clean oil from the following sealing surfaces.
^ The engine block sealing surface.
^ The oil pan sealing surface.
^ The timing cover sealing surface.

INSTALLATION
^ Tool Required
- J 35468 Seal Centering Tool, or equivalent

CAUTION: The correct tool must be used in order to align the timing cover. This will ensure that the timing cover seal will be centered around the crankshaft. The seal must be centered around the crankshaft in order to prevent damage during hub installation.

1. Install the crankshaft front oil seal.
a. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil.
b. Use Seal Centering Tool (J 35468) in order to install the seal to the cover.
2. Apply a 10 mm (3/8 inch) wide, by 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick, bead of RTV to the oil pan. Apply the RTV where the oil pan and the timing cover meet.
3. Apply a 6 mm (1/4 inch) wide, by 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick, bead of RTV to the front engine cover. Apply the RTV where the timing cover and the engine block meet.
4. Install the timing cover to the engine block, the J 35468 tool should still be in place.
5. Install the timing cover bolts.
^ Tighten the timing cover bolts to 10 Nm (97 inch lbs.)
6. Remove the Seal Centering Tool (J 35468) from the timing cover.





7. Install the oil pan.
8. Install the crankshaft balancer & hub.
9. Install the generator and brackets. Refer to Starting and Charging.
10. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Cooling System.
