Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

General Service Precautions

Caution: This vehicle has a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Refer to the SIR Component Location View in order to determine whether you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. Failure to follow the CAUTIONS could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

The inflatable restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module (DERM) maintains a reserve energy. When the vehicle power is insufficient to cause deployment of the air bag, the reserve energy supply provides the deployment power. Deployment power is available for as much as 2 minutes after disconnecting the vehicle power by any of the following methods:
^ Turn OFF the ignition switch
^ Disconnect the battery
^ Remove the fuse that powers the DERM Many of the SIR service procedures require the following:
^ Removal of the AIR BAG fuse
^ Disconnection of the DERM inflator module from the deployment loop to avoid an accidental deployment.

Disconnecting the DERM inflator module from the deployment loop allows you to begin service immediately without waiting for the time period to expire. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
