Functional Test - With A/C
To aid in determining whether or not the electrical, vacuum, and refrigeration systems are operating properly, perform the following test using the control assembly:
1. Verify blower switch operation. Check blower speed from the LO to the HI range. This will verify the proper operation of the blower switch, blower motor, blower motor resistor, and tire high blower relay.
2. Check for proper air flow distribution in each mode. The following indicates which outlets tire air should flow from:
A. MAX A/C-Air flows from the A/C outlets, including the lap air outlets. The recirculation door is open. The blower motor will sound louder than in normal A/C mode. The A/C compressor does operate.
B. NORM A/C-Air flows from the A/C outlets, including the lap air outlets. The recirculation door is closed. The A/C compressor does operate.
C. BI-LEV A/C-Air flows from the A/C outlets, including the lap air outlets and the heater outlet. The A/C compressor does operate.
D. VENT-.Air flows from the A/C outlets, including the lap air outlets. The A/C compressor does not operate.
E. HTR-Air flows from the heater outlets and a small amount flows from the defroster outlet arid the side window defoggers.
F. BLEND-Air flows from the defroster outlet, the side window defoggers, and the heater outlet. The A/C compressor does operate.
G. DEFROST-Air flows from the defroster outlet, the side window defoggers, arid a small amount flows from tire heater outlets. The A/C compressor car operate.
Testing tire individual modes verifies the proper function of the following systems:
- Tire complete vacuum system, assuring all vacuum connections arid associated parts are functioning properly.
- The complete electrical system including the electrical actuators and temperature sensors, assuring all electrical connections and associated parts are functioning properly.
3. Check the temperature selector functions. This can be accomplished by the following methods:
A. Check the temperature knob effort by moving it from the BLUE (Cold) to the RED (Hot) position. Listen for the valve seating in the full BLUE (Cold) and the full RED (Hot) positions.
B. Check for heated air by having the temperature knob in the full RED (Hot) position and the mode knob in the DEFROST position.
C. Check for cooled air by having the temperature knob in the full BLUE (Cold) position and the mode knob in the MAX A/C or the NORM A/C positions. The air temperature from the A/C outlets should be at least -7°C (20°F) below ambient temperature after one minute of operation.
Testing the temperature range verifies the proper function of the following:
- Complete connections for the electrical, vacuum, and the refrigerant systems.
- Complete connections of the heater system.
- The proper function of the temperature door in the heater assembly.
- The proper operation of the temperature knob for temperature selection.
