Axle Nut
NOTE: The proper functioning of the front suspension cannot be maintained unless the front wheel bearings are correctly adjusted. The cones must be a slip fit on the spindle and the inside diameter of the cones must be lubricated to ensure the cones will creep. The spindle nut must have a free-running fit on the spindle threads.
ADJUST
1. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands.
2. Remove the cap (17) from the rotor/hub (21).
3. Remove the cotter pin (16). Tighten (18) to 16 Nm (12 lb ft) while turning the wheel assembly forward (this fully seats the bearings).
4. Back off the nut (18) to the "just loose" position.
5. Hand tighten the nut (18).
6. Back off nut (18) until the hole in the spindle lines up with a slot on the nut.
- The nut should not be backed off more than 1/2 of a flat.
7. Install a new cotter pin (16).
- Bend the ends of the cotter pin against the nut (18) and cut off any extra length to ensure the ends will not interfere with the cap (17).
- Measure the end play in the rotor/hub assembly (21). It should be from 0.03 to 0.13 mm (0.001 to 0.005 inches) when properly adjusted.
8. Install the cap (17) on the rotor/hub (21).
9. Lower the vehicle.
