Upper Control Arm Replacement








^ Tool Required:
- J 23742 Ball Joint Separator
- Or Equivalent

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

NOTE: Note the location of the alignment shims. They are to be replaced in the same position from which they were removed.

1. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
- Position the safety stands between the lower control arm spring seat and the lower ball joint.
- Place a floor jack under the lower control arm spring seat.

NOTE: Floor jack must remain under the lower control arm spring seat during removal and installation to retain the spring and lower control arm in position.

2. Tire and wheel.
3. Cotter pin (2) and nut (3).
4. Steering knuckle (11) from the upper ball joint (1).





- Use J 23742 to break the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Lift the upper control arm to free it from the steering knuckle.
- Support the steering knuckle/hub assembly to prevent its weight from damaging the brake hose.
5. Nuts (43) and shims (47).
6. Bolts (4).
- Lift the upper control arm to gain access.
7. Upper control arm (49).





INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Upper control arm (49) to the frame.
- Line up the holes in the shaft (42) with the holes in the frame.
2. Shims (47) and bolts (4).
- Lift the upper control arm to gain access.
- Mount the shims exactly as removed.
- Tighten (43) to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
3. Upper ball joint (1) to the steering knuckle (11).
- Make sure the ball joint is fully seated into the steering knuckle.
4. Nut (3). Tighten (3) to 85 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
5. Cotter pin (2).
- Tighten the nut (3) further to align the hole in ball joint with the slot in the nut.
6. Tire and wheel.
7. Remove the floor jack from under the lower control arm (24).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Check front wheel alignment.
