Seats - Bench Seat Noise, Creak/Squawk

File In Section: 10 - Body

Bulletin No.: 76-16-14

Date: September, 1997

Subject:
Bench Seat Noise, Creak, Squawk
(Open Gap in Seat Support Bracket)

Models:
1997 Chevrolet and GMC M/L Vans

Condition

Some owners may comment about a creak or squawk noise coming from the bench seat.

Cause

The side of the upper seat track is in hard contact with the side of the rear support bracket (See Figure 1). As the seat track shifts while the van is moving, or as a passenger shifts back and forth on the seat, this hard contact can produce a noise.

Correction

Carefully insert a small screw driver or metal wedge between the track and support bracket (see Figure 1) to create a small gap (up to 1 mm/.039") between the track and support bracket.

Care must be exercised to not damage the track which could result in increased effort required to adjust the seat track fore or aft. Verify that the noise is corrected before returning the van to the owner.
