Self-Diagnostics

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) performs self-diagnostics and can detect and often isolate system malfunctions. When a malfunction is detected, the EBCM sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) that represents the malfunction, turns on the ANTILOCK lamp (in most instances), and disables the Four Wheel Antilock (4WAL) functions while the ANTILOCK lamp is on. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) performs two system self-tests automatically

First Self Test
The first self-test is performed when the ignition is turned to RUN. Both the ABS ANTILOCK lamp and the BRAKE warning lamp will turn on for a few seconds, then they will turn off individually. If one of the lights stays on, it could indicate that either the ABS or base brake system needs attention.

Second Self Test
The EBCM performs an automatic self-test the first time the vehicle reaches approximately 13 km/h (8 mph) for each ignition cycle. The EBCM cycles the pump motor and each valve to check component operation. A noise from the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) may be noticed when this function occurs. If it detects an error, it sets a DTC.
